Patch Set 1:

Unknown is used in two ways really. It fundamentally means that you have a way to contact something, but you don't know if they are actually there. It's also used in the core for indicating that device state has changed but the state is not known at that time. It's up to the core to poll the channel driver which calculates and returns the state. That's how chan_pjsip actually works and some other channel drivers.
