Following a discussion with Kevin on IRC and a post on:
http://lists.digium.com/pipermail/asterisk-dev/2007-January/025792.html

This is a the first patch.

I did manually all dirs except channels/, for that dir i put NULL for the
ast_channel, since that patch will be broken really easily.
I will take care of getting it and provide any fix if that broke
something.

I'm closing this out as this issue doesn't really serve any purpose.  I
have talked to Junky and he does plan to redo this patch at some point. 
When he does, I told him I would review it quickly and get it into trunk as
soon as possible.  W e don't need this to get that done ...
