test server, where I compiled and installed Asterisk 1.4.11, I see that I
have no sip.conf entries, which I would assume should be automatically
created as each user has the SIP check box checked.

I followed the AsteriskNOW Users Guide (found here:
http://forums.digium.com/viewtopic.php?t=12592&sid=21c929b8e4f3c685204e935d37a408a7).

The latest Beta does not map directly, as there are some sections (SIP,
IAX and Jabber, as an example) in the manual that don't show in the GUI.

My (incorrect) assumption was that the GUI was the mechanism to configure
the appliance - going back and checking confirms it makes no explicit
mention of the need to manually configure channels.

As an aside, I built an Asterisk server using "The Future of Telephony"
PDF and I have to say it is more straightforward a process than the
appliance, which I find rather odd...
