If you are using FreeBSD, or any *BSD the procedure is very simple.
You don't even need actual telephony hardware because you can work
directly with SIP and IAX2. Look in the ports tree and you will find
Asterisk, just make install clean and your done. If you intend to use
IAX2 I'm pretty sure you will need DAHDI (a.k.a. Zaptel) which if I
remember correctly is in a separate FBSD port.
