And voicemail was configured to allow calling out?

Not a good idea for an internet-facing machine... I
think this was probably the first thing I disabled
when configuring voicemail.

Were the calls going through PSTN or SIP trunk? if
SIP get a provider who uses PREPAID credit so your
risk is limited to the amount of credit you have
with them on that account.
