[asterisk-biz] FWD moving to $30 annual membership fee

I think one of the worst enemies of the industry is the expectation users
have that they should get everything free. Eventually, it affects
developers and service related individuals who could make a nice living if
they could collect a small fee from the public (what is $2.50 per month,
after all??). Gone are the days when a talented individual could sell a
computer software or service and make a few hundred thousand dollars of it,
just by posting it in a catalog. Nowadays, many users sneer at individuals
that although talented, do not have the millions of dollars necessary to
give out their services for free and live in the red for months or even
years.

Giving a service for free is the equivalent of having a monopoly sell a
product for under its cost, for as long as it takes, just to get the rest of
the competition out of the market. Although we are not going to change the
market, the public in general should be more supportive of their peers.
Case in point, Pulver. How many years have many used his software for free?
Wouldn't it be fair that he charges a nominal amount just to cover expenses,
or heck, to make money if the man wants to.

The internet in general would be more egalitarian if we people would pay
for some of the free services we now have.

CS
Jeff... see you outside :)

Yeah and skype is $5.95/mo for unlimited calling in a given country. So
its not that much cheaper to have no pstn access.

Now if you were to spend $2.50 (all up front unlike the skype monthly
fee) what would you get? The ability to have a FWD number htat people
can call? Anything else? That was my point. I dont see the value
personally for anything above $0.

Gizmo for example is free, has many free features, even free pstn
interconnects under certain conditions. So this makes it seem like its
even less of a value to pay for FWD.

But that is my opinion, only time will tell what happens.
