Nikolas Zennström spoke at Von in California earlier this year. I
didn't agree with his premise that Skype could not interop openly
over IP because of security concerns, but that was his stance - Skype
wont be releasing enough information about their protocol and
techniques to permit open interop with their customers.

It would be an enormous culture change that turned this beast around
(and I would welcome news suggesting that they may).

Anyone who has reverse engineered a way in, is showing some
ingenuity, but to rely on this conduit for commercial gain would be a
significant risk. To borrow the words of a clever man, "I encourage
our competitors to do this".

The best thing that we as a community can do is to sell the strengths
of open standards like SIP as -- long term -- the best business
decision compared with voice solutions that rely on both secret
protocols (vendor lock is expensive), and also a p2p network (that
breaks when your customers' computers reboot) to survive.

Best wishes,
Andy Davidson
