not correct.

to overwrite callerid you just need proper route. it can be voip route,
so, only asterisk alone is ok.

such routes of coures is expensive, comparing against voip, since
providers have good ss7 insterconnections.

for example, provider i use have costs for:

usa 0.025$
uk mobile 0.33$ !!!! 

other destinations also not cheap. they provide clear voice quality to
all destinations and well working DTMF, and ability to set own callerid.
