Robert,

If you want to learn dialplans inside and out, your first step should  
be to ditch Asterisk at home and work to rebuild the same functionality  
yourself from scratch. I like Asterisk at Home, but it is best suited  
for those who want a solution that "just works", not those who want  
to dig in and really learn the nuts and bolts of dialplan logic.

Once you have done that, you ought to have a decent idea of how to  
work with dialplans.
