Its trivial for them to change any name you may see and any phone number
you may call.

While this type of activity is somewhat hard to deal with, its always
better to use a trusted escrow service or have prepayment terms to avoid
this type of a problem.  Of course prepayment can result in the same
type of a situation, although generally if someone takes your money on a
prepayment scheme they have to deliver or its fraud, although if its a
dispute over quality of product delviered then often its civil and not
criminal, so again lack of police assistance.

Escrow is your best bet, just make sure they are a trusted entity.  I
have seen very questionable 'escrow services' that people have requested
I use, and a simple whois shows the domain registered last week, contact
information is a hotmail account, etc.  Its far easier to verify an
escrow company 1 time and use them for all your business where customers
dont want to prepay than it is to verify every customer you may get.
