The formula I like is:
1. How much money do you think you should be making per year? Let's say
$80k for an experience technical person.
2. How many hours do you think you will be billing per year? A good
independent consultant is lucky to bill 15 hours a week on average with
the rest being paperwork, making sales calls, etc. This means you need to
charge $102/hr (let's say an even $100).
3. Estimate how much time you think the job will take. Now double it. It
ALWAYS runs into more time. Especially when doing one-off projects like
this.

> other alternatives could they provide in lieu of a huge consultant's

Avoid clients with shoestring budgets unless you are into charity or are
willing to accept payment in barter but chickens and goat milk don't pay
the mortgage.
