<p>We don't have to address security issues that often, so I think that the cost of keeping security-fix-only branches alive for 12 months is pretty reasonable; it gives users another six months to let the most recent release branch 'stabilize' (if necessary) before they need to switch over to it.</p>

<p>What about shorter security updates for non-LTS branches; 6 months? To help minimize the burden for maintaining the extra branch?</p>
