<p>I believe that it is described internally as presence by last activity. Try having a chat in gmail and open up Google+ and continue the chat. The gmail chat will lag or not show the conversation. It will be logged if you have chat logging enabled. This is also true of some other servers like OpenFire, last activity takes precedence.</p>

<p>Yes, it seems that when you're logged in via the web client, it takes precedence over any logins that Asterisk might make.</p>
