nutshell, 1.4 is the oldest and most stable, 1.6 is the current and 1.8 is the
beta version of Asterisk. This is a gross over-simplification, but if you “know
nothing”, 1.4 is going to give you the fewest headaches and if you “have
to have the latest” 1.6 or 1.8 is the way to go. The ChangeLogs on
