Typically when I see those errors it's because the memory cycles aren't
completing.  I'm not a VMWARE passthrough user/expert (but am interested
if this configuration will work), so I'm not sure if there is an extra
step you need to do to make sure that the memory window is opened up and
whether your host machine must have an IOMMU in order to remap any IO /
DMA transactions.

Do you know whether VMWARE says pci passthrough should work on your host
system?  Have you been able to put a NIC card into the host and setup
PCI-passthrough on it?

My System guy is applying the ESXi4000 U1 patch.  Will let you know if that
fixes it.
