Two options: 

* the 'root=' parameter is incorrect somehow . Please re-read again the
  list of parameters.

* Something is wrong with the initrd (or maybe just the kernel?)
  Can you boot a different kernel?

If that fails, boot from a different live CD / USB key and chroot into
your system, as others have already suggested.
