Tilghman,
In your opinion, how much pain is usually involved with bringing in
"out-of-date" branches? I suppose that would depend on the complexity of
the function?

There's actually a branch to do this type of thing, called ast_storage.
Alas, it is out of date and hasn't been updated in awhile.
