[asterisk-users] where did the switch statement come from?

The switch statement allows you to 'include' a context from another
machine into your machine.
Problems with it was if the other machine was unavailable, or even slow
to respond, your machine would hang until it timed out.
DUNDI has since replaced the functionality of the switch statement and
given you so much more in return

Hi all,
I have looked up the applications and function in asterisk but i could
not find the help for the switch statement which is used in several
places in sample extensions.conf file. i am using asterisk 1.4.2. On
voip-info.org the switch statement seems to be used to connect 2
asterisk servers, but i could not find a satisfactory explanation for
the this statement. Can anybody help me understand the switch statement?
