   Well, it does serve end-subscribers logically, but no, they are usually 
not "directly" connected in any meaningful sense;  DLCs and GR.303 trunks,
or as channels in big multiplexed circuits.

   The main differences are in capability, scalability, and 
interoperability.  Asterisk has very little of the former compared to a 
softswitch, and not enough of the latter.
