[Asterisk-Users] wav vs gsm sounds

Hi Everyone,

I have been wondering why asterisk is using gsm when it can just use a wav 
file format instead.
    From some of the snippets of what I read I was made to understand that 
gsm

files eat up
more resources.
Pls can anyone give me a good reason for this.
