I personally found configuring a smart host easier to do with postfix.
With a little server magic on my corporate email server, I now get my
logwatches direct to my personal inbox also. Much better, IMHO.
I see how it was possible with sendmail, but in the midst of learning
asterisk, I just didn't want to commit the time...

A smarthost is another SMTP server (e.g. your corporate email server,
which should already be capable of sending outbound email) that your
Asterisk box is configured to send all outgoing mail to, instead of
trying to deliver it directly.
The smarthost will need to be configured to accept mail from the
Asterisk server, but that's usually easier to configure as the server is
internal. :)
