The switch between analog and digital makes a huge difference to port density.  With an analog TDM card you can get 4 FXO/FXS ports per card.
 
With a digital T1 PRI card, you can get 4 T1 spans with 23 voice channels each.
 
If you are going to use a lot of analog ports (more than 8) then you may benefit from moving to a channel bank and installing a PRI card to the Asterisk box.
