Thoughts, hmmmm....

Not a lot to go on, what's "top" showing
when this happens?

I suspect a run away process consuming all
resources. Is it really asterisk?

I had this kind of problem at least once
a week and it was "mpg123" gone berserk.

Once I replaced "mpg123" with "madplay"
no more problems.

Just something to check.
