[Asterisk-Users] Upgrade *@home to CVS-HEAD

Hi Dean
I'm not trying to knock *@Home, I think it's a great product, but I want to
try upgrading to the full version, and using the tools required to keep up
to date etc.
I tried AMP and found the extensions created didn't work, and couldn't
figure out how to get my inbound IAX2 or SIP feeds to work. * wouldn't
register and when dialed they skipped to the alternative number. I didn't
understand the setup of the trunk or other IAX connections so I gave up with
the interface. I started in the conf editor of AMP, and moved onto SSH to
handle monitoring the CLI and testing.
I haven't dismissed @home as a "beginners toy", I said that the attitude of
most of the users of this list was that it was a beginners intro to using
asterisk. The reply to people asking newb questions is use @home, and to
those wanting to test. Also a lot of questions about using asterisk in @home
builds is dismissive or just plain ignored. I just want to move on and try
the tools required to work with the CVS and to know how to compile in apps
and the like. I will keep a copy of @home available as ISO for a quick
build should I want another test server.
I don't know if it was my lack of understanding or the layout of AMP which
resulted in my failures, but I'm not especially concerned, I have a solution
I am happy with, and if users of AMP like their solution then fair play to
them. I'm haven't done exaustive testing or used all the features of the
system, which is why I'm not passing on ideas or problems to those involved
with the projects as it wouldn't be realistic.
I spend time assessing/playing with lots of different technologies for lots
of different reasons, and its mainly if a client of mine has a requirement I
have an idea of the alternatives to offer them. If I ever need them then I
will spend the time to learn it in all its fine glory, but as it stands I
just can't afford the time to play, when I have money to earn and bills to
pay.
Best wishes
Mark

Hi Mark,
Yes Asterisk at home is built on Stable so I guess you have the option of
running a regular install of Head but realistically this is the best
position to build production PABX's from.
As for not using AMP and preferring to set everything up via nano - what
specifically couldn't AMP do?
You failed to mention exactly what you were trying to achieve that AMP
couldn't do.
If it's valuable to you maybe the AMP developers could build it in to the
next gui upgrade.
If you haven't even connected up any pstn or hardphones I'm guessing you
didn't really spend much time 'trialing' AMP before dismissing it as a
beginner's toy.
Cheers,
Dean

Hi Dean
I haven't found any limitations as such. It just seems a lot of people have
this impression of *@home as being a beginners tool. It was fabulous for
the first couple of weeks, (as I have been running it for a couple of
weeks), but I want to see how I go about migrating up to the big brother as
it were. I gather the build of asterisk in *@home is a little behind the
main distribution so since I think I have got what I want working I want to
make sure I am up to date. It seems upgrading to the CVS build is a more
effective option than trying to upgrade to *@home 0.7.
Re: AMP I gave up on that after about half an hours playing and went
straight into editing the .conf files manually, (SSH/NANO). I tried AMP but
things didn't work so I chose to do it manually, I learn better that way
:)
Plus a lot of the discussion in here revolves around the conf files, and so
to understand the discussion you really need to be familiar with the .conf
files themselves.
I have no complaints about *@home. It did what I wanted, got me set up no
problem. Once I'm upgraded and stable I'm going to try getting my PSTN
linked in, and then probably a cheap SIP / IAX hardphone.
Cheers

Mark, what exactly are the limitations you are finding?
You do know that you can make modifications to the AMP dial plan don't you?

Hi
I installed *@home 0.6 to play with the system, and learn. I tried AMP but
didn't like it and so set forth into the conf files manually. I have it all
set up how I want, all my extensions work etc. Reading this list and
playing in the wiki and google, I get the impression *@home is great for
learning, but has a few limitiations. I would like to upgrade my box to the
latest stable cvs build, but can't find any info on the process. How to
save my .conf and recorded prompts and upgrade.
If someone could point me in the right direction for resources on how to
upgrade my * I would be most greatful. I assume the * build in *@home is a
standard distribution, which I can just upgrade somehow.
Thanks again for any help.
