It's not "muting" your speakers, it's locking your sound device. Two
solutions:

- noload chan_alsa,

- provide a virtual mixer device in alsa.conf instead of a real hardware
  device, see http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin for
  details,
