The internal architecture of asterisk right now is based on sending a
packet for each packet received (timing), therefore asterisk is not
currently compatible with VAD/Silence support regardless of which
codec you use. (eg, its not a codec issue at all.)
There was some discussion in the past about changing that architecture,
but my understanding is that it's not a trevial task at all. Might
search the archives for more accurate detail.
