That's because 'a' is used when you're *in* the VoiceMail app...  i.e. you 
need to be hearing "You've reached my voicemail, leave a message" and press 
*.  That's exactly how most telco voicemail (and most KSU/PBX voicemail too) 
works.

If you want to do it in your IVR, then add a '*' extension.
