Aside from FRS, interesting thing about this, is that they are very careful
to treat the VoIP part under the same rules as FCC HAM i.e. if I were in
Canada and I was using, say, Asterisk or VoIP in general to hook into this
thing with it's transmitter in the US, technically, I wouldn't be allowed to
talk on that freq. because I wasn't licensed to use that freq in the US,
even though the transmitter/owner is licensed correctly in the US!
Seems odd, because I believe the rules were established at least in part to
avoid crosstalk issues etc. But it seems VoIP changes the rules a bit here.
What if I was a licensed HAM and I was in Canada and using VoIP to talk to
my transmitter in the US? Is that ok? I can think of all kinds of wierd
scenarios.
I know of the rule that prevents you from interfacing PSTN to HAM, but what
about VoIP? Unregulated. As far as the FCC is concerned, my Asterisk box is
the same as a Linksys hub.
To the hams on the list: How can something like this be policed? Is there a
ruling, or precedent on this? My 10 second google didn't turn up anything
close.
