[Asterisk-Users] zaptel compile to incorrect directory

Hello,
I am trying to compile zaptel from source.
The zaptel.ko compiles into /lib/modules/2.6.12.3/misc   ,
i want it to go into
/lib/modules/2.6.12.3.08-04-2005-HOSTNAME

HEAD from today , I am new to UDEV but followed
instructions. 
custom kernel on Debian ala... make menuconfig, make-kpkg
clean,make-kpg --append-to-version=.$DATE-$HOSTNAME

My workaround was to 
cp -ia /lib/modules/2.6.12.3/misc
/lib/modules/2.6.12.3.08-04-2005-$HOSTNAME
depmod -ae
modprobe zaptel
I know this can't be correct. Any tips?
