Ahh, I tried that but left out the 1 to prefix the area code. That did it,

I use:

exten => _9NXXXXXX,1,Dial(SIP/1801${EXTEN:1}@voiceglo)

where 'voiceglo' is the name of the service definition in my sip.conf:
[voiceglo]
username=
secret=
...
