This has been discussed multiple times on the list.  Read the archives, 
as in google this topic using 'site:lists.digium.com' in the search box 
as well as your query.

Short answer - NO you cannot use a regular modem.  Long answer - maybe, 
read the wiki - it may give you clues as to whether or not your modem
