Yes. You have only given a small fraction of the details needed to tell
you anything about your problem.

Which OS on your Mac, linux, BSD, or OS X? Hardware? Are you trying to
use asterisk built in alsa or OSS sound card support?

Maybe you would be better off not trying to have asterisk touch your
soundcard. Instead use a VoIP software phone app that then can connect
to the asterisk process running locally.
