This is not correct. See the trunkgroup directive in zapata.conf for NFAS 
support. 

Actually, asterisk lets you put the D channel in any of the timeslots on 
one span as well, but I have never seen the D-channel on anything bu slot 
24 (for T1) or 16 (for E1).

Oh, and post these kinds of questions to asterisk-users and not 
asterisk-dev. The latter is for development of Asterisk.
