It depends. Some providers like, Voipjet for example, don't provided
DIDs. DIDs=Direct Inward Dialing Numbers=phone numbers. Since they
don't offer DIDs I can only use them to make outgoing calls.

There are other providers who offer both DIDs and outbound termination,
like Nufone for example, or Sixtel.net.

It's not like a traditional phone line where you use the same
connection to make an receive calls. I have one provider for my 800
number, another for a couple of Houston area 713 DIDs, and I make calls
through Voipjet. I shop around for the lowest cost and best reliability
in each case.

I prefer IAX for simplicity in passing all these connections through my
router.
