[Asterisk-Users] couple basic questions

OK, I have RH9 up and running ... respecting the advice that I should know my way around Linux before plunging into Asterisk,  can anyone comment on the things I should be able to do with Linux before I attempt to bring up Asterisk?  Thanks Much!
 
P.S.  By way of background, years ago I did a little shell and network programming with Solaris and emacs, but have largely forgot the details and have never been a sys admin.
