My company thought about that once. Are only concern was stability at
that point. While I rarely have any concerns over asterisk stability
anymore, you need to be at that comfort level.
Remember in that configuration you have listed, any failure of the
asterisk box is going to effect the old pbx. If your users are not
prepared for the interruptions and have expectations set about usage,
then you may end up with upset users.
You should feel comfortable fixing asterisk config problems in a crunch.
If you are down because a config problem in the middle of the work day,
do you feel you can get it back together quickly?
Once you have the above 3 items down, then you do want to do what you
suggested above.
