[Asterisk-Users] Asterisk vs. system user accounts

No-one has mentioned PAM yet.  (pluggable authentication modules).

If you implement PAM in Asterisk, then you have LDAP/passwd shadow
windows etc. in one step.

Maybe the phone numbers in /etc/passwd will get used!
