For Olle->Wiki:
Also in Grub you can pass parameters to kernel:
   1) edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
   2) find the command that loads kernel, e.g. something like this:
       kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x317:off
splash=silent showopts
   3) change the parameter vga=... to vga=normal
   4) save and reboot
