Ok, here it goes again. I upgraded with:
svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/asterisk/team/moy/mfcr2-1.4
mfcr2-1.4
Results were:
[root at ivr pbx]# ./download
U mfcr2-1.4/channels/chan_dahdi.c
A mfcr2-1.4/channels/ring_tone.h
A mfcr2-1.4/channels/busy_tone.h
U mfcr2-1.4/channels
U mfcr2-1.4

Checked out external at revision 148.
Checked out revision 513.
Checked out revision 194609.
The first thing I note is the version (Asterisk 1.4.23.1) has not
changed. May be it doesn't matter???
Error messages related to invalid category appear to have dissapeared:
Connected to Asterisk 1.4.23.1 currently running on ivr (pid = 5946)
Verbosity is at least 1000
Core debug is at least 1000

I don't know if the telco uses the category for something, but I try
again with another priority:

The results are again successful, so I believe the probem is over. Thanks.
