[asterisk-dev] pass data between threads

This may be obvious to folks familiar with Asterisk. But if you wanted to create some new application which was not a channel driver AND wanted to have that in a background thread which other threads could then pass data too the question is: What are the existing functions to use in Asterisk to pass data from existing Asterisk threads (say channel threads) to a new background thread for a new application?
