While I understand that you guys want to move on (which I do as well), a reality check is needed here. I don't think 1.8 is production ready yet. All tests I've run have failed and there's no possibility to migrate installations away from 1.4 yet. I know that some people run 1.8 in production and this mail is not to discuss that, it's just to point out that for my customers, closing 1.4 support at this time will be hurtful since there's no alternative to upgrade to.
Closing 1.4 bug fixing would be really bad at this time. Regardless of what you do with the project, I will have to support it for at least the rest of the year for my customers - depending on the state of 1.8 after the summer. It would be better if this support could happen in the main branch and not in a forked-off code base.
I propose that we continue support of 1.4 to the end of the year while focusing on getting 1.8 production ready. It took more than a year to get 1.4 in the state so that we could migrate away from older code. 1.8 is still young and immature.
