I've tried both G.729 and alaw.
Like a magic, it works very fine!
The audio quality is good, and there is no sensible delay
after half an hour of conversation.
So it may be a codec problem only occur to G.723.1.
I also tried mixed codec situation, say
A uses G.723.1 and B use G.729.
A can hear clear audio from B, but
B hears choppy sound.
The problem was independent of the channel types.
(I used SIP, H.323 and MGCP)
BTW, my G.723.1 and G.729 codec are from Intel IPP library.
I decided to file a report to Mantis:
http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=5697
Hopefully it can be fixed before 1.2.0 release.
