Let me take this chance to say again that a really great way to get into 
Asterisk development is to take part in the stable maintainance process. 
  Most of my maintainance duties involve taking patches that were 
written for cvs head and porting them to the 1.0 branch.

Just go to the bugtracker and look at the issues marked as "pending 
stable".  Any help is always greatly appreciated, because I don't get a 
lot of people trying to help, except from the thoughtful contributors 
that provide patches for CVS HEAD and 1.0.
