Thanks, I did intend to make things easier for config engine writers... 
and it also means we can make changes to the actual implementation of 
the config system in the future if we want without having such a major 
effect on existing config engines (for example, if we wanted to change 
the way ast_variable_append works, that can now be done invisibly to the 
config engine).
