Thank you Duane and Brian for the replies.  I have
opened  a bug on Gentoo's bugzilla tracker:

It includes /var/log/messages output from loading and
exercising the modules with the debug option turned
on.

I am going to try to get some input from the folks on
the IRC channel before I open a bug on Digium's mantis
tracker.  The bug guidelines suggest doing this (well,
talk to tech support) before opening bugs related to
