The codecs are patented, but I doubt that anything else is. That is a 
completely different issue from open code, anyway. The chipset is 
supposed to come with a licence to run the code, so the patents should 
have been licenced by buying the silicon. Using them away from the 
silicon would present a problem. The DSP in the PA168 is a 2181 clone, 
so apart from licencing issues many of the ADI DSP chips should be able 
to run it.
