No in fact you lose functionality.  Maybe you want/need to pass to another 
app, or AGI the result.  Maybe you want to do some other modification or 
lookup.  Any number of reasons why you'd like to see the variable first. 
You don't gain any efficiency really by moving it out of a separate step in 
the dial plan.
