[Asterisk-Dev] Help/hints for debug?

I'd like to contribute to the development effort by applying 25+ years
of technical telephony engineering experience, and particularly focus
on some of the low-level zaptel issues that have been floating around
(e.g., tdm fxo/fxs stuff). My very old BS Comp Sci background and more
recent electronics (chip level) skills need to be improved, but I think
that I can do that through analyzing existing code, etc.
I've never developed any linux code (done lots of Windows stuff), and
need a little kick-start in what would appear to be simple debug stuff.
Looking at the wctdm.c code, I see lots of debug statements involving
"printk". What is the proper way to turn on debugging for that module?
(I've tried changing logger.conf to include debug and starting asterisk
with a -d command line switch, but that does nothing for the wctdm module.)
In zaptel/zaptel.sysconfig I see "#DEBUG=yes". Am I suppose to uncomment
that and rebuild to see wctdm debug output?
Any help/suggestions along those lines would certainly help.
TIA,
Rich
