If it's fixing a bug then I say go that route. Just a thought though, if folks are worried about this particular change in the patch you could leave this part alone (unchanged), and then create a follow up patch that only modifies this part. If a problem does end up arising with it then easier to 'undo'.
Like I said just a suggestion. Don't have to do that or it might not make sense to really.
