Sorry for the slow response on this issue but we have finally gotten to testing and looking at it.

I started out with just testing under Python 2 to see if we could include this into the testsuite now. Unfortunately the change introduced a lot of test failures, on my system it introduced about 150.

Since it does not appear as though it can be immediately introduced and because of the further Python 3 support required I've created ASTERISK-26826 to track the progress over all. On that issue attached is also the test report from my system which shows which tests failed and the Python messages.

If we can ensure this does not cause problems for Python 2 but still helps with Python 3 we could move forward. Is this something you'd like to do?
